Birthday gift: Financial Independence

Dear Pihu,

Happy birthday! My wish for you for this year and the years ahead is that you lead a life that is fulfilling and full of challenges, which make you a better person.

One of the gifts I would like to pass on to you is to build a mind-set that helps you achieve financial independence at the earliest and that’s very much possible because you have age on your side to see the power of compounding unfold in front of you in your lifetime.

As you know, we created a portfolio of stocks for you sometime back and the same is growing at a healthy pace, as reflected below.

Into the unknown world of investing

I have tried blog writing in the past, but am still unsure of writing on 'Áppa's' blog. But I believe that I don't have a choice :-)

So, here is the first one.

Appa had a conversation with me a few days back and told me that he is gifting me some money. I thought it must be a few hundred rupees so I almost missed a beat when he told me that it's approx 1,00,000/-. That's 3 extra zeroes than my assumption.

He told me that he wanted me to invest this in the stock market, and then monitor its movement over the next few years. I have a sinister feeling that he is using this as an opportunity to 'educate' me.

But I have no idea of investment, stock market, stocks etc. Appa assured me that he will guide me through the process. He gave me a list of companies (he used the companies that Saurabh Mukherjea uncle talks about all the time!). I have met him a couple of times in the promenade area in Hiranandani Gardens Powai and he came across as a nice person.

So, Appa asked me to look at this list, and then do some analysis using google. He asked me to look at their share prices and asked me to look at how it looks. I started with Asian Paints and this is what I saw. It was very confusing.

Appa asked me to click on the next tab, which said '5 days'. It appeared even more confusing!!

Appa saw my expression and grinned. I asked him to stop grinning and threatened him to explain otherwise I would like to get back to my BTS videos on YouTube. He grinned even MORE and asked me to then click on the max tab. Suddenly, the graph changed.

He said ''does this look better?'' It did appear better and organized, but I still did not understand it fully except that it seemed to go UP like a snake.

He told me that the price of Asian Paints appears confusing if you look at it for a day or 5 days or even a month but changes when you look at it for a longer period like more than 10 years.

Appa then said that the list is stocks that he gave me consists of stocks which are like Asian Paints. They were HDFC Bank (Appa's salary comes in this bank, so you got to love them), Relaxo Footwear (they make chappals, you know!!). The list also had ITC. I asked as to what they do. When I heard that they also made cigarettes, I removed it from my list. Nope. Never. Appa was okay with my thought process.

Once I did my analysis, which consisted of looking at the Google data and looking at how the graphs looked like, and whether I liked what business they did, I went to the next step, which was to allocate money to the stocks. I had to pick and choose because I had limited money.

Once I was done, I tentatively showed it to Appa who looked at my allocation and said ''we are ready to roll...''

So, here is my list:
1  Asian Paints
2  Pidilite
3  Relaxo Footwear
4  Page industries (they make underwear for men, hee hee)
5  Nestle (Maggi Maggi Maggi!!!)
6  HDFC Bank
7  Bajaj Finance (Jennifer aunty works there)

I will update you on how my 'portfolio' is doing, in the next post.
BTW, I don't know how this going to turn out. So, wish me luck!

The observed becomes the observer...

I am adding the subject of this blog as an author. Pihu comes of age and is ready to take on the responsibility of running this blog from today. I may pitch in once in a while.

The situation demands broad shoulders to take on this onerous task ahead. Pihu may not have broad shoulders but definitely makes it up with wit and a sharp sense of humour...

Letting go is difficult, but it has to be done.

Love,
Daddy (also referred to as ‘Appa’)

Hinglish is a phunny language

So says Daddy!

Pihu is an excellent communicator, and has a good command over 2 languages, Hindi and Marathi. However, she is new to English, and has been introduced to the same in her nursery. Her teachers are very positive about her but have asked us to get her more comfortable with the language...

So, we try to speak to her in English and she does respond with a mix of 2-3 languages, when she is at a loss for words :-)

The other day, we were at a friend's place for dinner.
The host started the ritual of asking guests for their preferred poison. Yours truly chose beer.

Pihu was quite intrigued by the colour and very obviously wanted to have a swig. The influencer that she is, she has a way of getting around to the question in a very roundabout way :-)

The dialogue goes like this...
Pihu: 'Daddy, what is this?'
Daddy: 'It's a medicine'
Pihu: 'Ganda hain na'?
Daddy: 'Yes' :-)
She then comes and sits close to it.
Pihu: 'Can I 'pee'?

PS: This was written a couple of years back, and I had forgotten to post it...

All these critical decisions have been taken by a very high-ranking official in the CXO category.
Presenting to the world, the only & only CBO (Chief Barbie Officer) in this universe- Ms. Pihu Warrier!!

Art Gallery

The other day, I overheard a conversation between Mumma and Daddy...it went something like this.

Mumma: I have been able to prevail on most of your genes, but have lost in one area...the drawing/colouring gene!!

Daddy: Thank God! Her elephant drawing looks similar to the one that I'd drawn sometime back, which you felt, looked like a bee :-)

 Mumma: Absolutely!!

Daddy: And look at the sketch of the lion in the cage, with the giraffe outside. It looks like the lion's mother and giraffe's daddy had a dalliance, and the young lion is the output!!

Mumma fell down on the floor, laughing :-)

It looks like I am able to create a very happy climate in the house.
Let me present to you my latest art collection. It has 8 masterpieces in it....

Hope you have been able to appreciate the nuances that I usually leave for the receiver to grasp and appreciate.

My dadaji turned 78!

Recently, my dadji turned 78 years old! He is 72 years older than me!!
Isn't that amazing?

Usually, my dad's side is a little too subdued in celebrating events.
I have been able to change this by introducing the concept of cake cutting and getting together as a family.

I took Dad along to the market and selected a beautiful yellow cake (strawberry was not available)...

Dadaji was very happy when we surprised him with the cake, and had a wide smile on his face for the entire evening :-) It was worth the effort!

Best wishes to Dadaji for many more such happy birthday events!

Be healthy!

Both Daddy and me have decided to increase our health quotient!
Here's us after a long 21 kms run!
We look tired, but let me assure that it was a very satisfying experience...

Now that I think of it, it wasn't 21 kms. I guess it was 210 meters :-)
Just kidding!

Rock n Roll

The year is almost about to get over...
Seemingly, it has been an eventful year with economies going through financial crisis...

Daddy taught me that we should take all this in our stride, and move on in life...
The mantra is rock n roll!

If you really want to understand this fully, you need to 'just do it'!
You bend your body, and put your head on the ground. Done?

Now, you push the rest of your body ahead and roll :-)
Do it ith a big smile!

Tell me how you felt after doing this.
I am sure you would be feeling much better!

Whenever you feel low, try this technique.
It works! Always!

The mother of all math tests!!

Daddy was in a mood to teach me some Math.
I was in a mood to eat an ice-cream!!

The twain had to meet, and hence I negotiated that after the teaching session, I will submit myself to the most rigorous test that he can create on a piece of paper, on the concept of addition. If I answer all questions correctly, I will get what I want/deserve!!

I did not factor in the fact that he is my daddy!! I was expecting him to create a test paper of 10 questions (standard format), but he created 5 columns and put in 40 questions instead!! Smart move, I must say.

However, I was not too perturbed, and handled one question at a time.
The results were satisfactory. Daddy tried to find a mistake with a magnifying glass, but could not.

So, the evening walk experience became even better with the entire family going for a walk and celebrate with an ice-cream treat!!

Daddy says, he will create something similar on the concept of subtraction.
My take is 'we will cross the bridge when we reach it...'
